Terminology: Two-Spirit
In memory of Orange Shirt Day, I was reminded of destructive legacy of colonialism, including but not limited to, the introduction of homophobia and transphobia into Native American communities. Before colonialism, LGBT people were revered as "Two-Spirited." Two-spirited people were considered blessed by the Creator, able to see both sides of a world. The label Two Spirit is still used by many Native Americans today. Click here for a short video from a fab two-spirited drag queen.
